2026-02-28 AC2 - Architectural Infographics

Executive Brief

This session of Advanced Computing 2 focused on the transition from general infographics to Architectural Infographics. The core thesis is that architectural diagrams (specifically “parti” diagrams) must be injected with data to move beyond simple form-based communication. The instructor utilized the history of the London Underground map as a case study in “architectural simplification” and provided a framework for layering complex information—such as room types, square footage, and environmental data—onto 3D massing and 2D matrices.

Key Decisions & Insights

·       Definition of Architectural Infographic:

A synthesis of a Parti Diagram + Data + Creativity. It is not just a representation of form, but a tool to communicate statistics (e.g., ventilation percentages, square footage, or room connectivity).

·       The “London Underground” Principle:

Effective design prioritizes system logic over geographic accuracy. In architecture, this translates to simplifying complex spaghetti-like data into horizontal, vertical, or 45-degree geometries to improve user understanding.

·       Volumetric Bar Charts:

Using 3D building masses to represent data (e.g., a bar chart where the height of a room block corresponds to its ventilation or size).

·       Proximity Matrices:

Using analytical grids to determine room connections before creating bubble diagrams, particularly for complex buildings with 40+ rooms.

·       Visual Formulas:

Using “Iconography Formulas” (e.g., Bookshelf + Arena = Book Arena) to communicate design concepts instantly.

·       Case Study (BESA Resort):

The instructor demonstrated how a complex “puzzle-piece” building with 15+ unit types was simplified using color-coded elevations and matrices. This allowed contractors and buyers to locate specific units (e.g., Unit 76) that were otherwise obscured in standard floor plans.

Scheduling

·       Immediate Deadline: Assignment 1 is due Sunday, March 1st.

·       Monday, March 2nd: Class will cover the “Infographic Creation Process,” unveil Assignment 2 (Architectural Infographics), and conduct a selection activity.

·       Future Milestone: A “Virtual Field Trip” involving VR headsets is being coordinated with Mr. Sean Johns for an upcoming Monday.
